Going to the movies is an awesome stress relief for most people. Sitting back, relaxing, and letting your mind escape to a different world is why movie going is one of the world’s favorite pastimes. Each time you grab a ticket stub and swing by the concessions stand to grab a cold soda and some buttery popcorn, you become part of a variety of demographics of moviegoers. Here, we explore some of the unique statistics about movie demographics.
Frequent Moviegoers by Age
In the last couple of years, the total number of frequent moviegoers, people who went to a movie at least once a month, increased by three percent. While this may not seem like a large enough statistic to be of concern in the grand scheme of movie demographics, a three percent increase means that 1.2 million people decided to start going to the movies more frequently. Within this frequent moviegoer statistic, the age group that constitutes the most frequent movie attendees is the 25-39 age group, closely followed by the 18-24 age group.
Frequent Moviegoers by Ethnicity
Ethnicity plays a role in movie demographics as well. Frequent Caucasian movie attendees increased over the course of the last three years, garnering 23.2 million people who qualify as frequent Caucasian moviegoers. Second to that group are Hispanics, who have 11.6 million people who identify as frequent moviegoers. The smallest demographic of frequent attendees are those who identify as Asian/Other, with only 3.5 million who would describe themselves as visiting the movies more than once a month.
Movie Attendance by Gender
Overall, the per capital annual movie attendance, which is defined as tickets sold per person, decreased for both males and females. Males decreased from 4.1 million to 3.8 million and females decreased from 3.9 million to 3.7 million.
3D Movie Demographics by Age
Three dimensional movies have increased in popularity over the last half decade. Their interactive effects and thrilling action scenes make for an exciting time for cinema attendees of all ages. Although the overall percentage of the population who went to 3D movies declined, the amount of 18-24 year olds who went to 3D movies increased from 1.3 million to 1.5 million. The age group with the largest decrease was the 12-17 age set, which saw almost a one million decrease, 2.1 million down to 1.3 million. The 60+ age group remained stagnant at 0.6 million, as did the 40-49 age group at 0.9 million.
Movie Demographics by State
One of the more interesting movie demographics, movie demographics by state may surprise you. Texas earned the top spot as having 75% of their population identifying as moviegoers, while 16% of the population identified as frequent moviegoers. California came in as a close second, with 74% of the population claiming to be cinema attendees and yet another 16% claiming to be frequent cinema attendees. Georgia had the lowest percentage of those who are moviegoers (59%), but it was Michigan who had the smallest percentage of frequent moviegoers (4%).
